Julia Jordan Mariella
Mike and Cindy Mesaros

My daughter, Julia Jordan Mariella Mesaros, was born on May 11, 2007. I was diagnosed with marginal cord insertion at my 20-week ultrasound, but the follow-up scan at 30 weeks seemed to indicate it was normal, so we assumed all was well.

I carried Julia almost 42 weeks, trying everything I could think of to get labor to start on its own. Thank God it didn't! I was hiking around my neighborhood without a cell phone, climbing stairs ... I hate to think what would have happened had my membranes ruptured at home.

Finally we scheduled an induction for Friday, May 11. We were anticipating an easy delivery, as this was my 2nd baby, but when the nurse midwife ruptured my membranes, I began to bleed profusely. At first I thought it was amniotic fluid and I was happy until I saw his face. I was rushed to the operating room for an emergency c-section under general anesthesia.

I remember looking up at the operating room lights, and being told not to look at the blood on the stretcher when I moved to the table. The anesthesiologist had a very calm voice, and so I remained calm. He told me that they needed to start the operation immediately, and I might be aware of what was going on but they couldn't wait another minute. I said yes - what else could I say? But luckily I went under right away.

Julia was born 15 minutes after my water was broken, and she required a blood transfusion at birth, with her dad by her side. She spent 48 hours in the NICU before being released to the well baby nursery on Mother's Day. It was the happiest day ever! We were told that the placenta was bi-lobed with velamentous cord insertion. The doctor's quick action saved our baby's life and we are grateful every day. Julia is now healthy & perfectly normal, and we feel very blessed.
